Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry dedicated to treating tooth-crowding and dental misalignment (malocclusions). Devices made to re-position teeth go back as far as the early Egyptians.
An Orthodontic Timeline
The first orthodontic literature “A Treatise on Oral Deformities as a Branch of Mechanical Surgery” was published in 1879 by Norman Kingsley when he introduced external force to move teeth.
In 1900, orthodontics was determined to be the first dental specialty. The first orthodontic school, The Independent School of Orthodontics, was founded by Edward H. Angle, who also established the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). Angle believed that facial aesthetics were enhanced by proper tooth positioning and went against the establishment in his opposition to the extraction of teeth.
Cephalometrics, or x-rays designed especially for orthodontic diagnostics and treatment planning, allowed practitioners to understand and consider the relationship between the teeth, bones, and soft-tissues.
In the 1930s, Calvin S. Case reintroduced the use of extraction in orthodontic treatment. He also suggested retainers be worn to prevent relapse.
Orthodontics Today
Modern orthodontists can customize treatment to achieve healthy and aesthetically pleasing results. Advances in orthodontics since the early 1900’s include digital 3D imaging, state-of-the-art bracket, and wire systems, and clear aligners. These improvements provide patients with better options than in the past.
Advances in imaging and innovative techniques have made achieving a straight smile much more comfortable than even ten years ago. Faster, more discreet options are available for orthodontic patients of all ages. This accessibility to treatment helps patients enhance both the way a smile looks and its overall health.
